Artur Barrio, Willem Weismann, Hugo Canoilas
Artur Barrio's work questions the boundaries between public space and intimate space, between interior and exterior, between intimate and collective, approaching the body as a place for inscription and political action. In Barrio's works, the body is an object with a meaningful materiality but also an author endowed with performativity. Between 1978 and 1979, the presentation of his Livro de Carne [Flesh Book], in Paris, would become a milestone in his artistic pathway.
His works are presented as Situations or Experiences marked by ephemerality and by a rejection of the conventional formats for artistic objects' production and display. Against this work's ephemerality as unique and unrepeatable moment, its record through written, photographic and video notes becomes autonomous.
Author of a wide artistic production, in dialogue with different historical, social and political environments, Barrio presents a work shaped by the dictatorships in Portugal and in Brazil, by the post-25th April period, and by the exchange between two countries and cultures. Winner of the Prémio Velásquez Artes Plásticas in 2011 and of the Grande Prémio EDP Arte in 2017, Artur Barrio was the chosen artist to represent Brazil in the 54th Venice Biennial in 2011.
